E. 2020-2021 Superintendent Search Oversight Committee Discussion
The firm discussed the process of the hiring committee. From Selecting firm, working with firm and superintendent selection. Recommendation would be to extend the firm process and selection, more face to face interviews with firm. Proposal were read, but in our minds, we placed a process that we thought would occur based on the proposals.
Possibly have a solid set of metrics for the firm selection. What was important to us. It would have been nice to know who we were working with before we hired them. Zen noted that it took awhile to get members up to speed on the process. It was noted that the metric that used the numbers may have been detrimental to the selection of the firm.
There was concern about the virtual layout that was not provided from the firm. Realize the timeline, and the time it takes to be transparent. We need to also keep in mind that this search happened in a pandemic. The timeline was important because of the need to select from qualified applicants.
Meet and greet: Possibly schedule a few days in between the Meet and Greet and the interviews. More time for the community to enter input. Some felt that the community had more opportunity to be involved. Ms. Morgan suggested the Rapid 10 questions at the end of the meet and greet may be a suggestion in the future. Some of the questions should be on the spot. The format that Pegge used was good. Ms. Morgan valued the Virtual Meet and Greet going into the future. Be more clear about the timeframe of the meet and greet and the survey.
How does that public opinion from the meet and greet fits in to the decision making process?
Selection of Videos: 15 minute videos were too fast. Many felt that the process was very quick, it was compounded by technical difficulties.
Questions: Developing the questions was not a smooth process. Possibly use the questions that we know instead of firm questions. The process was good, but was tough. Look at how we developed the questions. What we ended with was truly amazing. Take the set of questions that we have developed, take them and use what is relevant at that time. We need to remember that the process may be an in person process. Model questions for the situation.
Interviews: Good that the questions were out early, but we should have had some questions that they did not receive early. That process was good. Really look at whomever interviews, look at their backgrounds. That final process should have more inclusion of the search committee.
All the firms had positive things about them. Maybe pick apart the RFQ or RFP to see where and if the firm failed us. There was concern about how the hiring process was bound by the metric number.
Suggestions, go into websites, research ahead of time and have information there. Be sure that our characteristics are there. Looking at the aspects of how firm matches up with the things that we may need.
Updates from Mr. Crabtree-
Timeline was on par. We started when people get contracts in the Superintendent ranks. He sees a value in extending the meet and greet and interviews a little, but not much. People may make their conclusions with not enough information.
He believes that the public is savvy about researching candidates. Certainly we could have drawn out the process a little bit, but not much because it was the process. If you don't get the survey within the first 24 hours, you won't get the answers from people unless you do a reminder. If we draw it out, we need to do reminders. The last piece of the puzzle is the developing a transition plan with the Superintendent. It has already been put into place with the contract with Mr. Holland.
The mentorship is important for the new superintendent from the firm. How will it be beneficial. Possibly Mr. Holland will not want the assistance from the firm.
