Background Information:
Melissa Linton, the District's Curriculum Coordinator, will be giving a presentation during this work session on work conducted by the KPBSD Mathematics Curriculum Committee. The KPBSD Mathematics Curriculum Committee met on the following dates: May 10, October 1, 2, 3, and December 5, 6, 7 to revise the 2012 Mathematics curriculum. The committee's work included analyzing district-wide data, conducting a needs assessment, prioritizing the standards and designing standards-based curriculum maps for each grade level and mathematics course.
The committee used a backwards design approach to establish priorities for learning and avoid using the textbooks as the curriculum instead of a resource. Teachers collaboratively decided on important student learning outcomes for courses/grade levels using Alaska State standards. Each standards-based curriculum map includes identified student learning outcomes, essential questions, knowledge, skills, assessments, and resources.
