Background Information:
KPBSD’s Title VI Education Program, funded through the federal Office of Indian Education, has undergone changes in the last two years in personnel as well as programming. This update reflects the shifts in the Advisory Committee and programming. To meet federal guidelines and local bylaws, the Title VI Advisory Committee underwent personnel changes in regional seats. In addition, formal tribal representatives from peninsula tribes will now sit on the committee.
Still integral to Title VI programming are Kenai Peninsula Native Youth Leaders and Upstream Academy. However, efforts to increase indigenous education in the classroom and engage more Title VI families are underway this year. Through Title VI Classroom Culture kits and partnerships with Kenaitze Indian Tribe, more indigenous content is available for teachers to implement. In addition, family engagement activities such as Family Book Zoom Events, K-4 STEM Career Explorers Club, and a Title VI Senior High outreach are increasing the interactions with Title VI families throughout the district. True family engagement and interaction is needed for the Title VI office to truly develop authentic and appropriate programming.
