Background Information:
The committee will consider the Association of Alaska School Boards (AASB) recommended policies which relate to protecting children from inappropriate conduct by adults, including school staff and volunteers. AASB states that the purpose of these additions is to provide all staff, students, volunteers and community members with information about their role in protecting children. With the adoption of BP 4119.5 Sexual Misconduct & Inappropriate Boundary Invasions, the committee will consider the need for the policy.
On Dec. 9, 2019 the committee forwarded the policies to the work session with a recommendation for approval.
At the Jan. 13, 2020, work session, the policies were returned to the Policy Review Committee for additional work.
Feb. 3, 2020, the policy was postponed due to lack of time.
Mar. 2, 2020, the committee began work on BP 5141.42 Professional Boundaries of Staff with Students.
June 1, 2020,
Borough Attorney Ms. Patty Burley discussed the issues that concern her about the policy. She noted that hiring practices and trainings are important areas.
Mr. Jones suggested that Mrs. Burley work with AASB and her sources on the National Level and talk to the AASB attorney regarding her concerns. The committee agreed that it was a good idea to cover the gray areas of BP 5141.42, AR 5141.42a and E 5141.42b Professional Boundaries of Staff with Students.
It is presented here today for discussion by the committee.
