Background Information:
The district has been developing and introducing programs within the district to combat the continuing increasing vape usage within our schools. According to the American Lung Association (ALA), E-cigarettes are now the most commonly used tobacco product among students. 28% of high school students nationwide are now vaping. Students often don’t realize just how harmful these products are, largely due to marketing techniques that are aimed at spreading misinformation. Vapes are designed to deliver nicotine quickly, which means that addiction happens quickly as well.
We now have a number of evidence based programs at our disposal that are aimed at education and cessation support.
It is recommended that the policy be reviewed and updated to include the language for vaping, electronic devices and distribution of tobacco products. The policy was reviewed in committee on May 3, 2021 and is presented here for review.
