Attached are the following 2023-2024, 2024-2025, 2025-2026, KPBSD Calendar Committee Action 11.15.2022, KPBSD Flexible Instruction Day (FID) Draft Plan for FY2024-2025

Action Item: KPBSD Administration recommends the BOE approve the 2024-2025 and the 2025-2026 calendars.

Notable Changes and rational follow

2023-24 District Calendar was approved by the Board on 12/7/2020 and approved by DEED on 11/10/2022.
SY2024-2025 and SY2025-2026 move start and end dates by one week.
SY2024-2025 and SY2025-2026 first day of school on Wednesday. Preference from 2018 survey to staff and stakeholders. Preference from 2022 Calendar Committee. Allows a short week for an easier transition for young students and gives school staff two days at the beginning of the week to finalize start up.
SY2024-2025 and SY2025-2026 Winter Break Inservice/Workday be after the end of the Winter Break, not prior. Based on staff input this gives a day to best prepare for the second semester and complete grading. Many teachers grade during Winter Break, and this will allow them a workday to get additional items completed and providing a more relaxed Winter Break.
2 School Closure Days built into the calendar 2024-2025 (MLK and GF). It has been recommended to discuss the identified school closure alternating days between MLK and Veterans Day. It was suggested to look at Presidents Day (third Monday in February as an option. Veterans Day moves during the week and is often prior to snow closure days. MLK occurs two weeks after Winter Break. It was suggested moving to Presidents Day as a patriotic holiday may assist with the removal of Veterans Day. Currently 14 schools have a Veterans Day Celebration.
Flexible Instruction Days to replace school closure days if the KPBSD exceeds the two school closure days built into the schedule beginning SY2024-2025
- Survey Data 2,228 Respondents to the survey 46.45% prefer FID and 53.55% prefer extension of school year. Principals informally shared staff were concerned about the fidelity of work and stated more people would have voted in favor if presented with a plan and a timeline to create the process.
