    Background Information:

Recently, questions regarding the process of Board approval of certified staff resignations have been asked of the administration.  The questions have centered around redactions and rare recommendations for the board to not approve a certified staff member’s resignation.  In BP 4117.2 Certificated Personnel-Resignation, the superintendent has been delegated to accept resignations on behalf of the Board.  Our review of comparable Alaskan school districts’ practices did not reveal other school boards that approve resignations.  This led to a discussion with legal and they are of the opinion that formal board approval of certified staff resignations leads to confusion and is unnecessary due to BP 4117.2 which states that the resignations cannot be withdrawn after they are accepted by the superintendent.

District administration is recommending that the process of certified staff resignations mirror that of support staff resignations.  Each month that the superintendent accepts a resignation, a list of those resignations will be provided in the regular board meeting general information packet.  If the superintendent does not accept a resignation, the staff member will have an opportunity to appeal that decision to the board as a part of employee due process procedures.

It is the intent of KPBSD administration to begin this new process in handling certified staff resignations in July 2018.
