KPSAA is seeking approval from the School Board on these recommended handbook changes that the KPSAA Board has discussed during the 2017-2018 school year. The final draft handbooks for the School Board to approve are attached.
After discussion and input from the School Board at the May 7, 2018 Board of Education Work Session, it is recommended that the school board approve the previously submitted Handbook changes for the SY 2018-19, with the exception of:
- In regards to the KPSAA Boards request to add any new stipends, it should be noted that administration recommends against adding any new stipends, and asks that the School Board approve the KPSAA Handbook with stipend levels remaining at 2017-18 numbers.
- In regards to the Middle School Handbook Changes, Page 13, VI. General Activities Policies, Section A, Item 4. Distance Restriction. It was originally requested that the school board eliminate the out of district travel restriction to allow for more events with fiscal perspective in mind:
“Travel beyond 40 miles (one-way) should be discouraged on school days (Mon-Thurs) during the regular season. Middle School co-curricular activities shall be restricted to travel on the Kenai Peninsula only.”
Following the May 7, 2018 Work Session, it is recommended that the school board amend the stuck-through text above to the following:
“Middle School Teams shall be allowed to travel off the Kenai Peninsula for competition purposes one (1) time per season if a waiver is requested through the KPSAA Executive Secretary and approved by the Superintendent.”
