Kaleidoscope Charter School was last approved as a charter school with the grade enrollment being K-6. With the activities available at Kenai Middle School the 6th grade enrollment at Kaleidoscope had dropped to approximately 15 students per year. The Kaleidoscope APC considered the matter and after discussion amongst themselves and with District Administration, they decided to discontinue 6th grade enrollment and have a K-5 enrollment at Kaleidoscope starting in the 2015-2016 school year.
This summer while we were updating files and preparing for the upcoming school year we noticed that the State still listed Kaleidoscope as a K-6 facility. When we contacted them to correct the grade level difference they informed us that per 4 AAC 33.113 Amendment of charter, the School Board would need to approve an amendment to the charter and forward the amended contract to the Department of Education. The Department of Education noted that this change would not need review by the State Board of Education and Early Development.
So we are bringing this matter forward to formally change the grade configuration for Kaleidoscope Charter School from K-6 to K-5.
