DKPSAA Handbook Review

Vaughn Dosko, KPSAA Executive Secretary, will present a summary of the handbook changes that the KPSAA Board has discussed this year.  This work session will be an opportunity for the Board and Administration to provide feedback and discuss any concerns that they may have.  Attached is a summary of what Mr. Dosko will be discussing during this work session.

The entirety of the KPSAA Handbook proposed changes and the final approval of the handbooks by the KPBSD Board of Education are scheduled to take place at the June Board meeting. There will be some formatting and placement differences in the middle and high school handbooks included in the completed copies that would come before the Board for approval.

Elementary School Handbook Change

1. CONCUSSION INFORMATION relocated and language updated to match ASAA
2. PARTICIPATION GUIDELINES FOR ACTIVITIES, Section D, Item 1. Participation Fee

A maximum of $15 $20 per activity may be charged in order to run intramural programs at each site, excluding forensics.

Middle School Handbook Changes

No backcourt defense is permitted until the 2nd half.  However, if a team is ahead by 20 or more points int the second half, then they are not allowed to play backcourt defense. If the lead drops below 20 points, then the backcourt defense is permitted.

Any Home School Program, Connections Program, Distance Education Program, Credit Recovery Program, Alternative School, Standards Based Schools (River City Academy and Susan B. English), are is responsible for determining their students’ progress at each eligibility check and follow the same guidelines as the rest of the district.  All of these programs listed are responsible for determining and communicating their students’ progress at for each eligibility check to the school of eligibility.  All of these programs and correspondence students must meet the same timeframe requirements as students within the traditional school setting. Refer to Appendix C for the Non-KPBSD form, if applicable.

Page 24, COACH’S RESPONSIBILITIES
Be currently certified in the NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching along with the Alaska/ASAA State Component, First Aid Health and Safety, Concussion in Sports, Sudden Cardiac Arrest and Protecting Students From Abuse. In addition to the above courses, coaches of Unified Sports programs must have successfully completed the NFHSLearn Unified Sports course.
