AR 5131.9Academic Honesty

The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District acknowledges the significance of academic honesty and the evolving role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in educational settings. This regulation provides a framework to help ensure that AI tools are utilized effectively and ethically in our schools, upholding the integrity of academic work.

Section 1. Definition of Academic Honesty

Academic honesty is the performance of academic work without, but not limited to: cheating, plagiarism, falsification, using unauthorized materials or tools, and other forms of academic misconduct. Academic honesty includes demonstrating one's own knowledge, reasoning, creativity, and understanding through authentic student work.

Section 2. Academic Honesty and AI Tools

Artificial intelligence (AI) may be used as an instructional tool when its use supports the educational objectives of the assignment and promotes student learning. AI is intended to enhance learning, not replace the thinking, reasoning, creativity, and problemsolving through which students develop knowledge and demonstrate understanding. Students remain responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of all work submitted for academic credit.

Section 3. Responsibilities and Use of AI Tools

Students: Must maintain academic honesty, shall complete work consistent with teacher expectations, demonstrate their own learning and understanding, credit all sources , including AI tools as required by the teacher, verify the accuracy of AI generated information before submitting work, protect personal and confidential information when using AI tools, use AI only in ways authorized for the assignment.

Teachers: Are responsible for determining when AI use is appropriate for assignments, determine when AI use is prohibited, communicate expectations for AI use clearly to students, establish disclosure requirements when AI use is permitted, design assessments that accurately measure student learning and model ethical and responsible AI use when appropriate.

Appropriate Use examples:

• brainstorming ideas

• explaining difficult concepts

• receiving feedback on writing

• grammar assistance

• creating study guides

• accessibility accommodations when authorized by the teacher

Inappropriate Use examples:

• submitting AI-generated work as one's own

• replacing independent analysis or problem solving

• unauthorized AI use during quizzes, tests, or assessments

• fabricating citations or sources

• using AI in ways prohibited by the teacher

Section 4. Consequences of Academic Dishonesty Involving AI Tools

Inappropriate and/or misuse of AI tools will be considered a violation of academic honesty and subject to disciplinary action in accordance with BP 5144 (Student Discipline).

Section 5. Monitoring and Compliance

The District reserves the right to monitor and review the use of AI tools to ensure compliance with this regulation and academic honesty standards.
