Background Information:
Understanding the true capacity of Kenai Peninsula Borough schools is complex. DEED uses a simple formula based on the area of the total facility which includes support and circulation areas. If one were to use classroom capacity as a more accurate gauge of school capacity, there would remain arguments of using the current PTR as the maximum number of students in each classroom, or to use the maximum physical capacity of how many students comfortably fit in the classroom as the determining factor.
Further complicating capacity determination is the number of classrooms that been repurposed or dedicated for uses other than for a traditional classroom. Special education needs have greatly expanded in recent years including therapy, intensive needs and intervention programs.
Rooms in primary schools have been dedicated for the instruction of art, music and band and are only used for a portion of the school-day.
Other rooms have been set aside as resource rooms, tutoring areas, Quest rooms and offices for Boys and Girls Clubs staff which utilize our schools.
All of these non-classroom uses of classrooms support and enhance the education experience of our students but come at the cost of lost capacity.
The attached spreadsheets attempt to capture the differing capacities of our school facilities.
