Background Information:
Recently, the Alaska Supreme Court made a ruling on the ability of districts to bar sex offenders from campus. After review by their attorney, the Association of Alaska School Boards (AASB) added the following language to their model policy BP 3515.5 Restrictions on Sex Offenders on Campus (see attached).
"Prior to restricting any person accused of a sex offense from campus, the district shall verify that the person is actually listed on the Alaska Department of Public Safety Sex Offender/Child Kidnapper Registry."
Attached is a revision to the corresponding KPBSD policy, BP 3515.7 Restrictions on Sex Offenders on Campus. The Policy Review Committee completed its review on Aug. 19. The policy was then discussed during a work session on Sept. 9. It is presented here for a first reading. Administration recommends approval of the revision.
