Background Information:
Soldotna Montessori Charter School is submitting their renewal application for a charter school for the 2017-2018 school year and beyond.
The Charter School Committee met on October 3rd, 2016, to review and discuss the renewal application. Based on concerns raised during the initial discussions, changes were made to the renewal application and the application was again reviewed by the Charter School Committee on November 7th, 2016. Following review by the Charter School Committee, a board work session was held for the board to review and discuss the application on November 7, 2016. During the regular meeting on November 7th, 2016, a Public Hearing was held to allow public testimony regarding the charter school renewal application.
One of the areas of concern that arose during the process was the fact that doing multiple charter school renewal applications in the same year is time consuming and doesn't allow as much time on individual schools as may be needed. To address that concern, the renewal years for the charter schools will be staggered. Soldotna Montessori Charter School will be given a nine (9) year renewal for the school years from 2017-2018 to 2025-2026.
Soldotna Montessori Charter School has a long history of success in the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District. Administration is pleased they have worked with the district on suggestions for improvement and have incorporated those changes in their renewal application. Administration is confident that this charter school will continue to operate successfully during their renewal periods.
