This will serve as the annual update for KPBSD's Native Education program provide by Coordinator Conrad Woodhead.

The KPBSD Title VI Native Education Program provides targeted assistance, as identified through the KPBSD Title VI Advisory Committee in the following ways: Tutoring, KPNYL, UP STREAM, and ANSEP.

Tutoring

Title VI provides fulltime tutors at three sites: Nanwalek, Port Graham, and Tebughna, and a haltime tutor at Nikiski Middle/High School. Additionally, Title Vi provides a fulltime teacher at Skyview Middle, who continues tutoring efforts at the school, as well as planning for Title VI opportunities such as UP STREAM Academy, ANSEP, and curriculum work designed to provide credit to Title VI students when participating in tribal sponsored events. Additionally, KPBSD continues its partnership with the Kenaitze Indian Tribe, who provides a tutor at Mt. View Elementary School.

NYCP

The Kenaitze Indian Tribe, in partnership with KPBSD, received a four-year Native Youth Community Project Grant last year, which provides tutoring services at Homer Middle, Kenai Middle, and Ninilchik.

KPNYL

Project GRAD/Kenai Peninsula Native Youth Leaders serves 13 sites: HHS, Susan B English, Soldotna Prep, Skyview, KCHS, Kenai Alt, Nanwalek, Port Graham, Ninilchik, Tebughna, Seward HS, and Soldotna HS.

ANSEP

KPBSD is committed to sending 12 students to the Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program this year. In FY15, KPBSD sent 48 qualifying 6-8 graders to the ANSEP MS Academy, which the tuition cost was provided by ANSEP. In FY16, tuition was not covered, and KPBSD partnered with LKSD and sent 18 students to ANSEP. For FY17, KPBSD sent 12 students to the ANSEP MS Academy.

Title VI Advisory Committee

The KPBSD Title VI Advisory Committee meets quarterly. The committee includes the following sub regional seats:

Seat B—Region 2 (Sterling, Soldotna)
Seat C—Region 3 (Seward, Moose Pass, Cooper Landing, Hope)
Seat D—Region 4 (Ninilchik, Anchor Point, Homer)
Seat E—Region 5 (Seldovia, Nanwalek, Port Graham)
Seat F—At-large (any region)

Partnerships

KPBSD currently benefits in numerous ways through partnerships with the following Native organizations:

Chugachmiut, Kenaitze Indian Tribe, Seldovia Village Tribe, and the Tebughna Foundation.

Credit

Numerous high school students received .5 credit from the following opportunities:

Kenaitze Construction Academy, Kenaitze Fish Camp, and KPNYL.
