District Wellness Annual Summary Report
Reporting Year: 2024
This annual summary report provides an overview of district-wide compliance with established nutrition and physical activity policies and outlines progress made toward the district’s wellness goals. The report is based on input from schools within the district, including survey data and committee discussions, in accordance with Board Policy AR 5040.
The Wellness Committee convened on October 24, 2024, marking its first meeting since 2021 and welcoming several new members, signaling a renewed commitment to student wellness.
Members Present:
Tony Graham (Director of Secondary Education), Lisa Julissen, Stacy Vinson, Vanessa McFall, Sarah Baisden, Sara Devolld, Shona Devolld, Austin Stevenson

The committee reviewed the district’s wellness policy, noting the transition from AR 5141.6 to AR 5040. This review emphasized the need to align current practices with updated guidelines and to clarify the committee’s charge in preparing annual reports on compliance with nutrition and physical activity policies.
The committee examined the results from the Hanover school survey, which assessed student wellness. While survey participation was low, particularly among parents, there was a clear desire to improve engagement and data collection in the future. The committee acknowledged past frustrations with data that did not lead to actionable outcomes and committed to making better use of collected information moving forward.
Discussion addressed several key areas:
- Nutritional Offerings: Members discussed variations in meal quality, the availability of chocolate milk, and the impact of outside food brought into schools.
- Communication: The committee agreed on the importance of clear communication with parents regarding nutritional standards and practices.
- Actionable Initiatives: There was consensus on implementing concrete actions based on survey data, such as organizing fun runs or other health-promoting activities in response to community feedback.
Challenges and Areas for Improvement
- Survey Engagement: Low participation rates, especially among parents, limit the ability to gather comprehensive feedback.
- Data Utilization: Previous data collection efforts were not effectively translated into action, highlighting the need for improved processes.
- Stakeholder Communication: Enhancing communication with all stakeholders remains a priority to ensure widespread understanding and support for wellness policies.
Next Steps and Recommendations
- Increase efforts to engage parents and students in future wellness surveys.
- Develop and implement clear communication strategies about nutrition and physical activity policies.
- Translate survey findings into actionable wellness initiatives at the school level.
- Continue to review and update wellness policies to ensure alignment with current best practices and regulatory requirements.
The Wellness Committee has re-established its foundation and set clear priorities for improving student wellness through updated policies, enhanced engagement, and actionable initiatives. The committee is committed to ongoing progress and transparent reporting in alignment with district and community expectations.
