School Board Update: Wellness/Physical Education Committee

The Wellness/Physical Education Committee met this year to review available information and identify priorities for continued data collection and program monitoring. Although attendance was limited, the committee engaged in a focused discussion centered on improving the quality and timeliness of information used to support decision-making.

During the meeting, the committee identified several areas of interest:

  • Using PowerSchool data to review student schedules and determine the average minutes of physical education offered in comparison to enrollment, expressed as minutes per child.
  • Gathering input from both teachers and students through surveys to supplement existing data and provide additional perspective.
  • Reviewing lunch-related data, including the number of lunches served and available nutritional information, with the goal of sharing this information more consistently with staff and families.
  • Noting the absence of a formal system for addressing unpaid lunch balances as an area that may warrant further review.

The committee also discussed the importance of establishing a more reliable and timely method for collecting this information, particularly by utilizing existing data systems rather than relying primarily on annual survey results, which are often received too late to be fully useful for planning purposes.

Overall, the meeting provided an opportunity to reaffirm the committee’s focus and outline next steps for more consistent data collection and reporting in the coming year.
