The public entrusts the Board with the governance of its schools. Board members, like teachers and administrators, need in-service training. As part of their job, Board members need to participate in professional development activities that help them understand their responsibilities, stay abreast of new developments in education, and learn new ways to cope effectively with the challenges they confront.

Board members are strongly encouraged to attend at least one or more Board development activities each year. Equal opportunities for development shall be brought to the Board’s attention.

Board members will report on the development activities they attend at a regular Board of Education meeting as soon as possible after the Board member's return. If traveling at Board expense, a written report is recommended.

The Board, in its discretion, may establish an annual travel budget. Such activities may include state, regional, and national workshops, conferences and conventions. Suggested guidelines for attendance are annual participation in Association of Alaska School Boards training and attendance at a national School Boards conference during the second year of a three-year term.
